Brad Holt
Relationship Manager, SVB
Brad is a Relationship Manager with Silicon Valley Bank. In this role, he manages SVB's early-stage efforts in New England, including banking and lending to early-stage venture-backed start-ups. Brad also works closely with SVB's emerging technologies banking practice in New England, which is comprised of hundreds of pre-funded technology start-ups. He currently serves on the Program Committee of The Capital Network (TCN), a non-profit organization providing extensive educational programs and a community to help early-stage entrepreneurs master the entire funding process and successsfully raise seed capital for financing their high-growth start-up. Brad is a graduate of Skidmore College, where he played varsity hockey.
Roger Hood (Moderator)
Shareholder, Duffy & Sweeney Ltd.
Roger, a shareholder in the firm, concentrates his practice in business law, intellectual property and technology law. He has developed a special focus on domestic and international licensing, often creating and negotiating licenses for merchandising, technology, trademark, software and other complex intellectual property matters. He also handles major employment issues, business immigration and commercial real estate. He often works with multi-national companies and their principals. Roger brings the perspective of three decades as a business lawyer to his clients' commercial transactions, often presenting alternate solutions that go beyond the immediate problem. He is known for his sound legal advice, innovative approach and business acumen. He joined Duffy & Sweeney after a 17-year legal career as senior counsel at global communications and electronics leader Motorola Inc. He advised and represented the company in a wide array of intellectual property, commercial transactions and employment law matters. Roger holds a BSBA from Northeastern University and a JD from Suffolk University.
Phyl Speser
CEO, Foresight Science & Technology
Phyl has had a nearly 30-year career as a business executive, lobbyist and author. He was the lead lobbyist for the Small Business Innovation Development Act, developer of the STTR concept with Roland Tibbetts and a lobbyist for the Technology Transfer Act of 1989, among other legislation. Phyl has authored many publications on technology transfer, commercialization and science policy, including the best-selling textbook
The Art and Science of Technology Transfer (John Wiley and Sons, 2006). He is a member of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia, the Association of University Technology Managers (where he is on the Public Policy Committee), the Licensing Executives Society (where he is Chair, Strategic Alliance Committee), and the Product Development and Management Association. He served two terms on the Board of the Technology Transfer Society and is a recipient of that Society's Certificate of Appreciation (1991). He also was Chairman of its Task Force on National Technology Transfer Policy (1989-1991) and received Best Paper, Annual Meeting (1987). He was a gubernatorial appointment to the Board of the Washington Technology Center from 1994 to 1997. Phyl has taught intellectual property at the State University of New York at Buffalo Law School, anthropology at The American University, Washington, DC, and political science at the Universitüt Mannheim, Germany and the State University of New York at Buffalo. Prior to founding Foresight, he was Special Assistant for Science Policy at the Federation of American Scientists. He holds a PhD and a JD from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Max Winograd
CEO & Co-Founder, NuLabel Technologies
Max is CEO and Co-Founder of NuLabel Technologies, a development stage Rhode Island start-up company commercializing liner-free label technology. NuLabel's solutions help companies cut costs and reduce waste by eliminating the back of the label that end-users peel and throw away. NuLabel was born out of a Brown University engineering project and founded in June 2009. NuLabel participated in the Betaspring start-up incubator in its inaugural program and then operated for the next five months out of the Rhode Island Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. NuLabel has been featured on the cover of
Providence Business News, in
Mass High Tech as the "Start-Up to Watch," and on NBC10 TV. Prior to founding NuLabel, Max attended Brown University, where he graduated in 2009 with a degree in Political Science.
