Dr. William M. Risen, Jr.
Department of Chemistry, Brown University
Dr. Risen's research is in the fields of Materials Science and
Physical-Inorganic Chemistry. His research has involved studies in the
areas of molecular spectroscopy, amorphous materials, including inorganic
glasses, ionomers, gels and hybrid aerogels; organometallic chemistry and
chemisorption models; electron-delocalized polymers; and quantized ion
motion. His research group at Brown University has synthesized novel hybrid
aerogels (which combine the chemistries of silica and bio-derived polymers,
such as chitosan) that are under study with a number of physical and
chemical approaches. In ionomer chemistry the group has three main
interests; novel polyurethane ionomers, electrical and chemical modification
of fuel cell membranes, and syntheses of novel classes of germanosiloxane
ionomers.
